A thought provoking debut, with a memorable narrator, caucsia a situation that deserves to be experienced or at least imagined by everyone. Since her In a world where we struggle to find our place, issues of race, sex, gender, sexuality and religion strive to complicate matters. When is she not passing? I have not read it yet but it really sounds interesting. Sisters Cole aka Colette and Birdie Lee’s parents were a mixed race couple who married in the late sixties. Of the two mixed children, Cole is more brown with curly hair and is unmistakable a black child. Most people today realize that race is entirely a social construction, but belief in racial differences is ingrained into the consciousness of America which built this nation on the backs of slavery which to be acceptable had to be rationalized as the natural order of things with white European’s belief in inherent superiority.
Brillant minds think alike! It’s always interesting to read stories like this one that help me see the world through an entirely different lens. Thanks for telling us about the problem. At times Senna seems to add details as an afterthought, inserting previously-undiscussed memories to allow for certain coincidences in the text to advance the plot. While some of the storytelling is uneven, particularly in some of the stretches where Birdie and her mother take to the road the commune is one of the weaker stretches, New Hampshire one of the bestI was entranced by a novel that unflinchingly spoke of a yearning, a depression, a central conflict that I could so deeply understand.

It was something that was on my mind a lot at the time, and it was exactly the right book for me then. We all wear one. For Birdie, Cole is the mirror in which she can see her own blackness. You left me with Mum, knowing she was going to disappear.
The different ways race is weaved in to The story is mind blowing. This late night caucaasia is made better by the fact that I have a row to myself and a large can of Surly.
Senna finds a perfect-pitch voice for Birdie that blends innocence, wry humor and straight-out pain. This was a book that has been on the shelves for so long that I actually forgot about it. Caucawia author presents a non-singular concept of being “white.
As a result, politics, not emotions, are engaged. It was republished in July Jun 21, Msladydeborah rated it it was amazing. Both sound like stunning stories that everybody should pick up.
